Glasvegas’ unique sonic quality combines soaring ‘wall of sound’ guitar melodies

with anthemic rock n roll soul and James Allan’s distinctive vocal delivery. They prove

that a band from Glasgow can have a global impact while staying true to their

roots. Glasvegas redefine the boundaries of what Scottish music can be.

Emerging in 2008 with an atmospheric soundscape shimmering up through the

classic rock ‘n’ decades, in breaking through Glasvegas leaned into the euphoric

rush of Phil Spector and the Shangri La’s, the bubble-gum punk of The Ramones, the

glowering intensity of The Jesus And Mary Main and the terrace-chant roar of

prime-time Oasis. Glasvegas self titled platinum debut album reached No.2 in the

album charts and sold over 500,000 copies worldwide. Christmas EP ‘A Snowflake Fell

(And It Felt Like A Kiss) was released three months later, recorded in the

Transylvanian mountains of Romania finishing off a stellar introduction to the world.

Redefining the boundaries of cultural identity, street life and rock n roll, Glasvegas

blazed a trail to be unapologetically heard and seen, defiantly wearing their truth

on their sleeve. All whilst unknowingly rooting a legacy that would reshape popular

music in Scotland. With 2011’s Euphoric /// Heartbreak \ Glasvegas embraced

the glittering new towers of electronic rock n roll influenced by Vangelis, Blade

Runner taking a more introspective look this time with their top 10 album. From the

Californian sun Glasvegas returned home turning their backs on the scorching light

with the 2013 release of Later…When The TV Turns To Static. Recorded in Glasgow

this self produced autobiography both bold and bewitching solidified Glasvegas as

pioneers of irresistible anthemic reality rock. Artistic progression pushed frontman

James Allan to build Glasvegas fourth release from the foundations. Crafting every

single element from writing, recording and production, Godspeed is a unified vision

influenced by American Graffiti and Philip Glass.

Glasvegas were formed, loosely, in the working class neighbourhood of Dalmarnock,

East End Glasgow in early 2006/7 by James and his cousin Rab Allan, Paul Donoghue

and Caroline McKay. Signed to Columbia Records in 2008 with full creative control,

Glasvegas debut album was recorded in New York and co-produced by Rich

Costey. Their spectacular debut – Glasvegas by Glasvegas bears witness to the epic

heartbreak of ‘Flowers And Football Tops’ (a mother grieves for her murdered son),

the irresistible ‘Geraldine’ (your saviour is not your lover, she’s your social worker), the

hollering ‘Go Square Go’ (the misguided violent machismo passed from father to

son), the soaring ‘Daddy’s Gone’ (the regret of the absent father) and the spectral

‘Stabbed’ (inside the mind of a gang victim), lyrics which James calls “poems”

which are somehow, simultaneously, both harrowing and hopeful, and seek, in the

end, the spirit of redemption. The platinum debut received widespread critical

acclaim and was nominated for the Music Mercury Prize Award, cementing a

dedicated fanbase. In Christmas of 2008 Glasvegas released a six track Christmas EP

A Snowflake Fell (And It Fell Like A Kiss) on Columbia Records. Recorded in a remote

castle in the Transylvanian mountains of Romania the Scottish four piece employed

the services of The Consentus Choir for ‘Silent Night’.

Their sophomore album released in April 2011 on Columbia Records reached the

Top 10 in the UK and No.1 in Sweden. Euphoric /// Heartbreak \ created in a

multi-million dollar beach house in Santa Monica, a widescreen thriller, a stunning,

spectral, indeed soundscape of aching ambition as if David Lynch Tiwn Peaks sound

track was speed up and reimagined. Produced by Flood (PJ Harvey/U2/Depeche

Mode), the lyrics this time personal odes to love, loss, suicide, sexuality, hope and

redemption.

“Euphoric///Heartbreak\ was like a sci-fi dream, a sensory overload and this time I

wanted to get to the bottom of the songs, get back down to Earth,” said chief

songwriter James Allan fresh from completion of Glasvegas third album Later…When

The TV Turns To Static. Released in 2013 on Glasvegas own label Go Wow Records

(via BMG), this 42 minute sojourn was written, self produced and mixed in Glasgow

and introduced new drummer Jonna Löfgren to the lineup. “I wanted to turn up the

human side so there’s nothing between you and the sentiment. Maybe the songs

demand a more intimate setting” reflected Allan, one of the most affecting rock n

roll vocalists Britain has ever produced.

A DIY crash course in creative autonomy, James Allan embarked on writing,

recording, producing and engineering Glasvegas’ fourth album Godspeed.

Created across New York, LA, Stockholm and Glasgow and mastered at Abbey

Road, Godspeed released on Go Wow Records in 2021 traverse themes of nihilism

and self destruction in Dying To Live, to the haunting piano ballad My Body Is A

Glasshouse A Thousand stones Ago.

Glasvegas’ influence can be heard in the work of subsequent Scottish bands and

artists who have followed in their footsteps, embracing their cultural heritage and

creating music that speaks to their own experiences.
